How to Keep Your Spine Healthy As You Age

Did you know that your spinal health can impact virtually every other aspect of your health and wellness? Your spine plays a major role in supporting your body’s central nervous system and, as such, you must do everything within your power to keep it healthy.

As you get older, you are likely to start experiencing some back pain. Many people assume that that is part of the aging process and nothing much can be done about it.

Nothing could be further from the truth. There are a number of things you can do to keep your spine healthy as you age and therefore reduce the chances of constant back pain.

Your health, lifestyle, diet and attitude are just some of the things that can determine whether you age gracefully or not. If you don’t take good care of your spine, it’s likely to catch up with you at some point. Fortunately, it’s never too late to start doing the right things to keep it in great condition.

Here are some of the things you can do to keep your spine healthy as you age:

  1. Exercise

Exercise is very important because it boosts blood circulation throughout your body. This helps maintain the proper functioning of all your body organs. If you can do some weight-bearing exercises, you can significantly reduce the risk of osteoporosis, also commonly referred to as bone loss. This is a condition that can lead to the weakening of your spine or even a spinal fracture. Make sure you incorporate exercises that strengthen your core and improve posture into your workout regimen.

  1. Get enough calcium

Calcium is crucial when it comes to strengthening your bones. If you are 30 or older, there is a strong likelihood that you are no longer building bone. Having sufficient calcium in your diet can help you in this regard. Fish, green vegetables and nuts are just some of the foods that are rich in calcium.

  1. Proper sleeping position

Although the reason we sleep is to be able to get some rest, you need to ensure that your spine actually gets adequate rest as you sleep. That means that you should use a mattress and pillows that will keep your spine adequately supported and comfortable as you sleep. If you are not sure which mattress is appropriate for you, you can ask for guidance before you purchase one.

4. Wear the right shoes

This is something that very many people tend to ignore. A good shoe is one that keeps your spine and body in alignment whether you are standing or moving. Although high-heeled shoes are stylish for women, they can cause significant strain on their backs. Flip-flops may also not be suitable because they lack arch support.

  1. Practice good posture

Good posture is absolutely critical, irrespective of your age. You should be very cautious with how you stand, bend, sit and lift because all these have a bearing on the health of your spine.

 

 

These tips can reduce your chances of developing different spinal problems. Of course, your state of mind also plays a part in how you feel about yourself. Even if you are already experiencing some aches pains, the right adjustments can make a huge difference.
